Project: Machrie Hotel, Isle of Islay
Sector: Hotels & Leisure
Client: CorraMore Construction
The Machrie Hotel & golf links are located on the island of Islay in Western Scotland. The Machrie golf course was designed 120 years ago and is considered one of the best links courses in the world. New owners bought over the hotel several years ago and decided to completely rebuild it. The new 47-room hotel includes a superb bar/restaurant; a private 30-seater cinema; function room; two treatment rooms; a sauna and small gym. The open courtyard in the middle of the complex can be covered to create a large function area to be used for special events.
BM Steel Fabrications supplied the architectural steel for the interior and exterior of the hotel. The project began in October 2017 and finished in June 2018. The company manufactured, shipped and installed 8 staircases for the hotel interiors. These were made of mild steel and were both curved and straight staircases.
Given the location of the hotel on the island of Islay, special attention had to be given to planning the logistics of the deliveries, to make sure that all components arrived on site, on time. All tools also had to be shipped along with the staircases and balconies. All the components were loaded onto lorries, to take them over on the ferry to Cairnryan. From there it was a 5-hour journey by road to the small port of Kennacraig in Northern Scotland and from there by boat to Islay. It was also important that the products were 100% perfect when they left the factory so that they were ready for installation on arrival.
“BM Steel worked with us on the new Machrie Hotel & Golf Links, Islay, Scotland. Logistically a challenge for all, as material was delivered directly via a ship and workforce transported on and off the island via helicopter. BM Steel took these challenges in their stride and performed excellently. Their package included design and fabrication of all eight staircases, architectural metalwork and glass balustrading. Their works were complete within programme and within budget”.
